STEM Avenues are our way of engaging the Montgomery College community in the amazing world of STEM! Through Jeopardy-style trivia games, we aim to spark curiosity and interest in STEM among students of all disciplines. MC Students can come to a STEM Avenue and try their hand at the games in hopes of winning prizes, all while learning fun facts about various STEM disciplines! STEM Avenues are located throughout all three campuses and are created, organized, and ran by our very own STEM Ambassadors.
STEM MathicalMathical
STEM Mathical is our exciting outreach initiative where STEM Ambassadors bring the world of STEM—with a special focus on Mathematics—to life for MCPS elementary and middle school students! Through fun, hands-on math activities and engaging STEM demonstrations, we aim to spark curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning in young minds. STEM Mathical events are designed, organized, and led by our very own STEM Ambassadors, who visit local schools to inspire the next generation of STEM thinkers and problem-solvers.

Hear from Our STEM Ambassadors

Camilla Lora

Name: Camilla Lora, Major: Public Health
Hello, my name is Camilla and my experience as a STEM Ambassador has helped me create a brand-new perspective on leadership. As someone desired to learn to take initiative, the STEM Ambassadors program has helped me balance responsibility with tasks being assigned as soon as I started the program. I am very happy to be a part of the program, as I also get to teach the next generation of innovative minds the importance of STEM.

Ayana Hall

Name: Anaya Hall, Major: Cybersecurity
Hello, my name is Anaya and when I first joined STEM Ambassadors, I was welcomed with open arms into such a great community. I started working in the Mathical department as an assistant, which allowed me to be more creative and learn how to create advertisements that appeal to different demographics.

I also volunteered at various schools outside the Mathical department, which broadened my community involvement. Fortunately, while volunteering, I collaborated with fellow ambassadors from different majors, which helped me build meaningful friendships. Teaching MCPS students ages 8-14 not only improved my public speaking skills but also showed me how the program positively impacts personal growth and community engagement. During my three semesters as a STEM Ambassador, I am grateful for the support from the program leads, which helped me develop as a leader and an individual.

Poojitha Jannu

Name: Poojitha Jannu, Major: Biological Sciences
Hi, I’m Poojitha Jannu, and I’m majoring in biological programs through the early college program. As a early college student in a STEM based major, I’ve spent a lot of my time working independently, staying within the pace that felt most comfortable to me.

It was a space where I knew how to succeed. Stepping into this role as a STEM Ambassador is still new for me, but it’s already been incredibly meaningful.  What made the transition feel so natural was my genuine love for volunteering and connecting with others.  Even though I was used to working on my own, I quickly found a sense of belonging among people who shared the same passion for making STEM more engaging to STEM majors and non-STEM majors. Through this experience, I’ve had the opportunity to help bring STEM activities to different schools, hosting Mathicals created spaces where younger students can expand their minds, ask questions, and feel included. I’ve also volunteered at events and Mathicals, working with younger students in ways that go beyond just teaching. It’s about encouraging curiosity, building confidence, and helping them see that STEM is something they are capable of being part of. Those moments with the students, when something clicks in their brain, or when they begin to enjoy learning, are the moments that resonate with me. Being new to this role has shown me that growth doesn’t come from staying where things feel easy, but from stepping into new opportunities. I’m still learning, still growing, but I’ve begun to see how much impact even small tasks can have. This experience is shaping me into someone who not only values knowledge, but also values the ability to share it, inspire others, and be part of something that reaches beyond myself: sharing STEM knowledge with the world.

Jayden Williams

Name: Jayden Williams, Major: Computer Science
My name is Jayden Williams, and I am an early college computer science Stem Ambassador! My role currently is the Germantown Mathical Manager, meaning that I handle communications and set up our Mathical events in Germantown. I joined STEM Ambassadors in my first semester at Montgomery College, and I do not regret it.

The program allows me to explore my STEM passion with peers that have the same exact passion as me.  I get opportunities to connect and expand STEM around the county as well as expand my own knowledge. Being able to explore a leadership position in an organization that makes a real impact in its community has been amazing, but being a member has also allowed me to expand my social circle as a new student at Montgomery College. Events such as STEM Avenue, in which members ask trivia questions around their campus, has allowed me to build connections with not only students in and outside of my cohort but also with the professors and administrators around campus. As an early college student entering an unfamiliar environment, my first semester was extremely intimidating. I worried that I would not have the opportunities to connect with my campus while also exploring my passions in my field; however, becoming a member of this organization has allowed me to do both.

Ambassador Mission statement

Ambassador Mission logo

At Montgomery College, the STEM Ambassadors program is more than just a leadership opportunity; it’s a platform for students to become role models, mentors, and changemakers in the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Being a STEM Ambassador means stepping into a role where you inspire the next generation of students, especially young girls and underrepresented youth, by demonstrating that anyone can be a scientist, engineer, or innovator.

Through volunteering at high-impact STEM events like the Maryland Science Bowl and STEM outreach workshops such as Mathecal, our Ambassadors build essential skills that help transform communities. This is not a title that merely equips you with skills, but one that demands active engagement and a commitment to ongoing growth. By participating in year-round outreach efforts such as the Mathecal program, STEM Avenue, and other hands-on events, Ambassadors build valuable skills in public speaking, leadership, community outreach, and career readiness. These experiences help students grow not just professionally, but personally, as they see the impact they have when a student realizes, perhaps for the first time, that they belong in STEM. From changing majors to discovering new passions, these moments reflect the power of what we do. Through every event, conversation, and connection, STEM Ambassadors represent the mission of Montgomery College: to transform lives, enrich our community, and ensure that every student, no matter their background, sees a future for themselves in STEM. Your words, your actions, and your service matter because when you become a STEM Ambassador, you represent something much bigger than yourself.

FAQs
  1. When applying, what do I keep in the GPA section? What is the minimum GPA?
Applicants should enter their cumulative GPA as it appears on their most recent transcript. To be considered "academically successful," a minimum GPA of 2.5 is generally expected, though the program values passion and commitment alongside academic standing.

  2. Do I have to be a STEM major to be a STEM ambassador?
No. We welcome students from all disciplines. The goal of the program is to spark curiosity in STEM across the entire college community, and having ambassadors from diverse academic backgrounds helps us reach more students.

  3. How do you contact us to get Ambassadors for events?
To request our team, use the "Request a STEM Ambassador" button on our website or contact our advisor, Nafeesa Azizi, directly. Please submit your request at least two weeks before your scheduled event.

  4. What makes the STEM Ambassador Program different from a club?
Unlike a traditional club, this is a leadership and service program. Ambassadors represent Montgomery College at official events, undergo professional development training, and are eligible for a $200 stipend upon fulfilling all semester requirements.

  5. What kind of events do STEM ambassadors participate in?
Ambassadors are involved in a variety of high-impact activities, including:
    • STEM Avenue: Hosting Jeopardy-style trivia games on campus.
    • Mathical: Engaging MCPS elementary and middle school students with mathfocused activities.
    • Science Bowls: Supporting regional competitions and hands-on workshops.
    • Community Outreach: Tabling at local science fairs and college festivals.

  6. How demanding is the STEM Ambassador Program?
The program requires a commitment of at least 15 service hours per semester. This includes attending weekly meetings (with a maximum of two excused absences allowed) and participating in outreach events.

  7. If not selected for the first time, can I reapply?
Absolutely. Some of our most successful ambassadors have applied more than once. Selection depends on current program capacity, so we highly encourage you to reapply in future terms.
