Learn by Doing: Field Experience with MCPS

Field experience with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is a cornerstone of Montgomery College’s teacher education transfer programs. Through this hands-on component, students earn credit toward the Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) while gaining meaningful classroom experience that prepares them for a future in education.

Placed in an MCPS classroom and guided by a master teacher, students move beyond observation to active engagement—working with small groups, supporting instruction, and tutoring students. These experiences offer authentic exposure to research-based best practices and help students build confidence, skills, and professional insight before transferring or entering the classroom.

What to Expect

As a participant in the MCPS field experience, you will:

  • Complete 30 hours of classroom observation and participation
(approximately 3–4 hours per week over 10 weeks)
  • Use observation as a learning tool and complete reflective writing assignments connected to course topics
  • Attend three on-campus seminars and a host school orientation during the semester
  • Be placed at an MCPS school near the campus where you are enrolled

This structured experience bridges theory and practice—helping you understand what effective teaching looks like in real classrooms.

Participation Requirements

To ensure the safety of students and schools, all participants must complete:

  • State and federal fingerprint-based background checks
  • Child Protective Services screening
  • Required MCPS online trainings

These steps are mandatory for any Montgomery College course that includes field experience in an MCPS school.

At Montgomery College, you don’t just study education—you experience it. With strong school district partnerships and guided, real-world learning, you’ll be prepared to take the next step toward becoming an effective, confident educator.

Exceptional Education. Extraordinary Outcomes.
