Special Police Officer Academy

We provide Maryland Special Police Officer applicant mandatory training in the 76 state-mandated training core objectives, including use of force and de-escalation, CPR/First Aid, arrest/criminal process, active shooter/incident protocols, note taking and reports. Upon successful completion of both classroom and lab, with 100% attendance required, the SPO candidate will receive a Certificate of Completion that is required when applying for a commission

This course will help to ensure that the following businesses and governmental units have candidates with the required training and skills to achieve their commission, while gaining the confidence to protect business guests and assets:

  • Colleges and universities
  • K-12 school systems
  • Court system employees
  • Retail establishments, restaurants
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

Maryland mandated 80 hour training for new SPO applicants. 

Must take both classroom and lab to meet requirements: 

  • Special Police Officer Academy (classroom)

  • Cost: $450 + $300 = $750; Non Maryland Resident add $350
  • AND
  • Special Police Officer Lab: Putting It All Together (lab)
  • Course: PST012

  • Cost: $25 + $100 = $125; Non Maryland Resident add $120 
    • Lab will be held on November 17 from 8:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m.
  • Graduation: Will be held on November 19, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

You may view our WDCE Web Registration page to get information about creating an account where you will find step by step directions with pictures to help guide you through the process as either a new student or returning student.
